Funcho

Funcho is a neighborhood usually recognized by the thoroughfares off the “Via Rápida” exits, leading to the lively coastal areas or the city center. However, just a little uphill from these major highways lies its unique charm. On the northern boundary of São Martinho, Funcho offers a sense of seclusion in parts, almost like a retreat from the noise and crowds, where you can finally take a breath.

The neighborhood strikes a distinct balance between residential, industrial, and open spaces. While it might not boast the polish of some areas, its pockets of greenery and spectacular mountain and ocean views remind you of Madeira’s natural beauty. Its an area where you can get away from the action or quickly get into it.

One of the things that stands out in Funcho is the proximity to natural areas. It has its own levada trail named after it, the Levada do Pico do Funcho, winding downhill and irrigating the area with mountain water, just as levadas have done for 500 years. It’s perfect if you’re someone who likes to lace up your boots and go for a walk to clear your head taking advantage of peaceful escapes into nature. You’ll often find quiet spots where an amazing view opens up to the coastline.

It has its scattered industrial buildings here and there yet on the other hand in places it feels like you've stepped back in time, with plenty of banana trees and grape vines still sitting in well-maintained gardens, small roads and a homey warmth in the typical houses.
