Monte

Monte is Funchal’s leafy, mist-kissed mountain suburb with old-world charm and a cooler, quieter pace just above the city.

If you’re into gardens, chestnut trees, and the idea of living in the clouds (literally some days), Monte might be your vibe. It’s higher up in elevation, so the temperature drops a few degrees, nice if you’re not into baking in summer heat. You’ll get way more green, a bit more rain, and that fresh, earthy mountain air that smells like vacation. The area’s best known for its botanical gardens, cable car, and those wild toboggan rides, but don’t worry, it’s not a theme park, it’s still a chill residential area where daily life feels slower and a bit more storybook.

The trade-off? The hills are steep, and the roads are twisty. Think switchbacks and solid calves if you’re walking. But you're only about 15 minutes from downtown Funchal, so it's not remote. You’ll find big traditional houses, some with serious views, and the area’s peaceful even in high season. Bonus: you’re above the noise but still close enough to everything that matters.
