Santa Maria Maior

If you love being close to the action but still want a sense of place, this is it. The heart of Funchal’s old town is right here: cobbled streets, painted doors, and a lot of restaurants aimed at both locals and visitors. It’s lively, sometimes a little toolively in the summer, but step a block or two away from the main strip, and you’ll find little houses clinging to the hillside and some surprisingly quiet corners.

It’s walkable, charming, and full of character, but do expect some noise and limited parking. The streets can be narrow and chaotic, but that’s half the fun (or half the frustration, depending on the day). Santa Maria Maior is for folks who want energy, walkability, and old-world flavor, with both the good and the gritty parts included.
