São Gonçalo
São Gonçalo is Funchal’s sunny-side suburb, stretching into the hills with panoramic views, quiet vibes, and space to breathe.
This one's for view lovers. São Gonçalo sprawls out along the southeastern hills above Funchal and offers some of the best ocean views around, on a clear day, it’s seriously dreamy. It’s a mostly residential area with bigger properties and more room to spread out.
You’ll want a car here, though. It’s not the most walkable area, and buses can be spotty depending on where you land. But for folks wanting a bit more privacy, sunshine, and elbow room while staying within striking distance of the city, São Gonçalo’s worth a look. FUN FACT: The area’s named after Madeira’s patron saint, and yep, there’s a big ol’ church up here too.
