In Madeira, five minutes away doesn't always mean five minutes away

On an island of steep hills, “walking distance” deserves a test walk. Especially on the way home.

There's something locals in Madeira learn very early: never trust a distance without looking at the hill.

A house might be just 500 metres from the village centre. Sounds perfect, right? Walking distance to cafés, shops, and the waterfront.

Well, technically.

In places like Ponta do Sol and Ribeira Brava, those 500 metres might involve a rather enthusiastic uphill climb. The kind that makes you question whether you really needed that loaf of bread.

And while locals are used to steep roads and unexpected staircases, newcomers sometimes discover that their charming hillside apartment comes with an unofficial daily workout.

There's another detail worth knowing: when Madeirans say something is "just five minutes away", they often mean by car.

So, before falling in love with a property because everything looks close on Google Maps, try walking the route yourself.

Preferably on the way back.

That's usually when the real estate research begins.
