The Lido Swimming Complex has continuously evolved since its beginning in 1932 and is the second oldest on the island (the oldest is the Barreirinha Bathing Complex, located in Funchal’s Old Town).

Most notably, in 2010, it closed for five years due to severe floods and mudslides. After extensive repairs, re-engineering, and upgrades, it reopened bigger and better.

Lido features one large main seawater pool and a nicely sized kiddie pool that is typically not crowded. Young kids eagerly run from the changing room and. jump off the rocks. Some even make it to that rock island you can see popping out of the Atlantic, Gorgulho, which is over 600 feet from Lido. For those who prefer a safe and steady entry into the water, Lido offers direct access to the sea via the typical painted white platforms for an easy jump or use the ladders.

Locals are committed to weekends at the “beach,” using it as a place to catch up with friends or simply enjoy the warm 65°-75° ocean water. You’ll find locals swimming in the sea year-round as part of their routines to stay fit and energized.

October is the best time to visit Lido. The weather is fantastic, the crowds are gone and the ocean is at its warmest.
